Scentsy, which makes and sells fragrant, wick-free candles, is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a novel gift to its workers and suppliers - and to fellow Treasure Valley businesses.

On Saturday, Scentsy said, nearly 1,000 employees, suppliers and their family members will fan out across the Valley, buying $2,500 in goods from each of 40 locally owned retailers, restaurants and other businesses.

The businesses were selected based on nominations by Scentsy employees. The Scentsy participants will visit the businesses in groups of 50. Each participant will spend $50 at each of two businesses - and keep the goods.

Scentsy, which is owned by President and CEO Orville Thompson and his family, is targeting its purchases at other family-ownedbusinesses, although executives say they haven't verified that every business they're visiting Saturday is family-owned.

Among the businesses are Shu's Idaho Running Co. and Every Wear Clothing in Boise, Ahi Sushi in Eagle, and Jake's Gluten Free Store in Meridian.

"We thought about doing a typical celebration for a company like ours," said John Curtis, public relations strategist for Scentsy.

"We thought maybe we'd do a carnival, rent some rides from some company in California for our employees," he said. "But then we thought: Why not spend the money here instead?"

The American Independent Business Alliance estimates that each dollar spent at a local independent merchant returns three or more times as much to the local economy as a dollar spent at chain-owned businesses, according to a Scentsy news release.

"Scentsy's overall philosophy is to give back more than we take," Thompson said.
